Fool's Quest by Robin hHobb

The Shakespearian Stories

I have been reading the Shakespeare Stories and I am going to share a bit about them,
Most people have heard of the famous William Shakespeare, but some people don't know a lot of his plays, so I am going to show you some plays. His language is a bit different to ours so I will highlight any hard words or names. so here are some of his plays: The taming of the shrew,  Much ado about nothing, The Tempest,  King Lear, Hamlet, As you like it, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Richard |||, Henry V,  The Merchant of Venice, Antony and Cleopatra,  Twelfth night, A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM, Julius Caeser, Macbeth. Now I will explain what the highlighted things mean:
1. A shrew is a sharp-tongued woman.
2. A tempest is a wild and violent storm.
3. King Lear is a king that gets betrayed by two of his daughters.
4. Hamlet is a prince who pretends to be mad so that he can see if his uncle killed his father.
5. Othello is a black skinned man, he gets lied to and does a terrible sin.
6. Romeo is a Montague and he loves Juliet who is in the Capulet family.
7. Juliet is a Capulet, and she loves Romeo who is in the Montague family.
8. Richard ||| is the Duke of Gloucester who kills people because he wants to be king.
9. Henry V is a king (at a youngish age) who starts a war. And wins the hearts of all his subjects.
10. A merchant is a very rich man.
11. Antony is a general who falls in love with Cleopatra.
12. Cleopatra is the queen of Egypt who falls in love with Antony.
13. Julius Caeser is a general(and NEARLY gets to be king) but sadly people kill him.
14. Macbeth is a general and becomes king but commits LOTS of sins and is haunted by ghosts.
So those are most of the books from the Shakespeare Stories. Hope you enjoy Shakespeare as much as I do. In my eyes, he was a brilliant writer! By Charlotte.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Hello all and welcome to Beantown, where I’ll be reviewing The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
This is a good book with beautiful hand-drawn images, and we’re very lucky to have a signed copy right here in our school library.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a work of historical fiction, based on the real-life French filmmaker Georges Méliès. The book's divided into two parts, including an epilogue.  It’s written and illustrated by Brian Selznick, (an American) and won the 2008 Caldecott Medal.
The plot goes something like this:
Somewhere in Paris, in the 1930s, Hugo and his dad find an old automaton at the museum where the father works.  They decide to fix it, however, Hugo’s father is killed in a fire in the museum where he works, so his uncle takes him into a train station to teach him to fix clocks.  Hugo’s uncle soon vanishes, but Hugo keeps the clocks running and survives on baked goods left out by the people at the station. Hugo leaves the station, and discovers...
If I go any further, I’ll be telling too much.
Go read it yourself!

5/5 hats.

Famous Five

Five Run Away Together

Five Run Away Together is the third book in the Famous Five series written by Enid Blyton. In this book Julian, Dick, Anne, Georgina ( George ) and their favourite dog, Timothy, run away from home when they were left in the care of the nasty Sticks. The five run away to Kirrin Island to escape from the Sticks only to find themselves in a spine-tingling adventure. My favourite part of the book is when the five discover that the island was being used by kidnappers. Who were the kidnappers? Why had they come here? The five had to find out. Join in on their adventure to find out more.

Rangers Apprentice

Image result for Rangers apprentice book 1
Rangers Apprentice Review:

The story is set in the medieval times in a fantasy world.
The story begins with a boy named Will who grows up in the castle ward from a young age. Will had never known who his parents were and has no memories about him. The story follows his life and shows all the adventures he goes on.

The story is smartly wrote so you can picture whats happening inside your head. John Flanagan does a good job showing the emotions of all the characters throughout the story.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure stories and would give it a 5/5
a

Warriors- Into the wild (1st book in series)

Warriors - Into The Wild.

Rusty, a cat with a coat, which resembles FIRE.

Rusty is a house cat, he always longed for a fresh piece of meat, and the freedom to hunt.
Little does he know that, this one single move could lead his WHOLE future in a completely new direction.

This book is the first of the warriors series by Erin Hunter.
It is a great adventure, which will definitely make you want to read the rest of this amazing series.

People who are interested in the life of a wild cat might enjoy this book and series. The author captures Rusty's feelings very well and expresses them, so the thought really reaches you.

I hope you enjoy this book!

             drank the moon.

This is a book set in a fantasy world, in a town that has twisted secrets. In this town every year a baby is chosen as a sacrifice to the witch that created the bog, only all is not what it seems. The main characters are a boy named Antain, and a girl called Luna she has been emagiked by drinking the moon, instead of the stars.

I have not finished this book but i am enjoying so far, it is full of little twists and turns, with a unexpected truth around every corner. I would highly recommend this book to those who like fantasy, witches, dragons and magic.

Mr Nobody's Eyes, By: Michael Morpurgo

Image result for mr nobody's eyes
This book is set during the war and the main character's name is Harry, Harry is a very curious boy who struggles in school and doesn't especially like his step-father or the new baby. He is just getting used to this different environment of living with his new family, there are so many strange rules and Harry doesn't often see his mother much, during these troubled times Harry befriends a circus monkey called Ocky and decides to run away with him. In the beginning living life on the road felt amazing, a new adventure but when everyone is willing to deceive them was living life on the road a good idea?

This book was a great read and for me it was very emotional, the way Michael Morpurgo wrote was very well written and when I read a lot of the scenery description I could see it very well in my mind. Once again it was a good read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a sad but adventure(ish) book to read.

Thanks,

Scythe

Scythe by Neal Shusterman is a futuristic book that has a very complicated, deep topic. It touches the idea that the internet (dubbed 'the thundercloud') becomes almost all knowing, solving all the worlds problems, including death. Because of the "problem" of death solved, people have become immortal, with death as the exception not the rule. Due to the problem of over population, the Scythe was formed, formed to kill people.

Scythe is possibly one of the best written books that I have read, I would give it a 10/10 due to the way this book is written, constantly delving into the topic of death and ethics and I think that it would be a very good read for someone with an open mind and advanced reading capabilities. The age range I would recommend this book for, would be between 11-18.

The Maze Runner

Set in a apocalyptic world, this Novel is one of a kind with the way it's written along side with how the characters are portrayed. Stuck in a maze that changes and has doors that close leaving people stuck who are in it every night, you don't want to be outside of the doors when they're closed because no one can survive the deadly sting of the grievers that lurk in the maze, always coming out at night, the total survives of the maze are zero. But Thomas has the choice to watch his friends die or risk his life to save them. Written by James Dashner this book keeps you on the edge of your seat with perfectly described surroundings and settings, if you like a book that has a good story line then this is the book for you.

Juno of Taris

I have just finished reading the Juno of Taris series, by Fleur Beale, a New Zealand author.
Juno of Taris is about a dystopian future, the story is set in a dome on a isolated island, where a few hundred people live. These people live unaware of what has happened on the 'outside', since they were evacuated a hundred years ago when earth began to self destruct. The story follows Juno who starts to question the islands many rules and what lies beyond their safe little dome. While trouble starts to stir on the island and between the people of Taris, Juno and her new born sister starts to experience super natrual abilities. As Juno learns how to survive through all the trouble, she finds new unexpected friends and new enemies.
I recommend this to people who like dystopian futuristic stories, or things to to with humanity and science stuff.

The Hunger Games

I have started reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is an award winning book and the trilogy has been made into award winning movies.

The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where each year people from the age of 12-18 are chosen to fight in a show called the Hunger Games. In this world-wide show people have to fight to the death and the last one standing wins. Katniss Everdeen and her family are preparing themselves for the reaping, when one boy and one girl from there district is chosen to compete, but things take a turn for the worst.

The Hunger Games is definitely a series to read, it is action packed, hooking and a page turner.

                                                                    The Land Of Stories
                                                                    By Chris Colfer

The Land Of Stories is an amazing book written by Chris Colfer, a well known golden globe-winning actor from the movie Glee, where he is featured with role of Kurt Hummel.

Twins Alex and Conner are transported the land of Fairy Tales. While they are there they meet such characters as Goldilocks, Snow White and Cinderella who have the role of getting the kids home safely. But when Alex and Conner are approached by creatures like wolves to Evil Queens, they end up in great danger.

Will Alex and Conner brake free from there magical land or will they be doomed for ever.

This amazing, funny, and imaginative book is definitely a book to read.  I loved reading every minute of this book and I defiantly recommend it.

A boy called Christmas

A boy called Christmas

A boy called Christmas (ABCC) is a very good book.  ABCC is the story of Father Christmas. Nothing in this book can be proved true, then again, no one can prove it is false. ABCC is the story of 11-yr old Nikkolas as he searches for his father, encountering trolls, pixies, elves and so much more. ABCC is a tale of adventure and loss, which never would have happened if Nikkolas hadn't been afraid to believe in magic.

I recommend A boy called Christmas to anyone who doesn't believe in the word impossible.

Dear Isaac Newton, You're Ruining My Life
Book By Rachel Hruza
Review by Kate Cronin

Dear Isaac Newton is about a young girl living with *scoliosis and how she deals with having a back brace at the same time as trying to live her life with "normal" problems. She blames Isaac Newton for her condition. "I hate Isaac Newton. The moment that apple fell from the tree and he thought up gravity was the moment my body was doomed" She mentions her hatred for him a couple times.

*scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine has a sideways curve. Find more information on scoliosis at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoliosis

I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to girls between the ages of 10 and 15. It definitely deserves a sequel.

Thank you for reading.

The Explorer

The Explorer

I have recently read a book called The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. This book is about four kids who are all on the same flight to Manaus, Brazil when their plane crashes down near the Amazon rainforest.  They have to find their way to Manaus, but the number one thing is that they have to survive. They land near a place where it looks suspiciously like someone has been there before them.  Da! Da! DA!
P.S. I would recommend this to anyone who likes adventure stories.

Reveiw on Russian Roulette

Great book had a hooking  story line and very good action parts. I would strongly recommend it to anyone as it was almost entrancing through the book. When I started reading it I was only on the first few chapters but when I looked at the page number again  I realized  I had read almost a hundred pages of the book. From the Alex Ridder serries it is more of flashback book as it tell you about how Yassen Gregorovich became an assassin.

Gone Series

Image result for gone series

A small town in California is suddenly turned upside down when everyone over 15 disappears. Cut off from the outside world, those left are trapped. With no help on the way foods running out and people are gaining mutant powers that nobody has ever seen before.

I have just finished the gone series and I could never put down the book. (Although there are some quite gruesome scenes) Each book has 400-500 pages but never gets boring. When you think the book is done just wait until the last chapter, then you will be begging your parents to get you the next one.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves suspense and mystery.

Thanks,

Connor

Ready Player One (Book)

Image result for ready player one book cover

I'm only half-way through the book,  (and only reading it to prepare myself to watch the movie). But I'll try my best.

The setting is in Earth ~30 years into the future, where the air is polluted, the resources are gone and stacks of trailers litter the city. Most people spend their days in Oasis, a virtual reality MMORPG that is now part of everyone's everyday lives, affecting the way they attend school, travel, or work.

The inventor of Oasis, James Halliday, became one of the most successful people in the world's entire history. When James Halliday's predicted but sudden death at 67 as a bachelor, the will he left behind in the form of a message contained cryptic clues and obscure 80s pop references, but as he talked, he revealed that the first person to find 'Halliday's Easter Egg' will inherit all his fortune and Oasis itself.

When Wade, an average poor guy in this horrible economy cracks the first clue of 3, he is now set to compete with the sudden rivals who will kill him to take the top prize.

--

The book is well written for a video game fantasy story, because I expected it to be more generous to the main character, like giving him some god weapon to defeat everything. It is sort of predictable, so sometimes I feel like just turning to the last page to see what it ends up as.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe

Recently, I read a book called the Loneliest Girl in the Universe, by Lauren James, and strongly recommend it. It is about a sixteen-year old girl called Romy Silvers whose pregnant mother was launched into space while she was expecting her. Romy is now the only pilot of a ship named The Infinity. Every other passenger is in cryogenic sleep.

It is a thrilling love story filled with action in space and the surprising ending will leave you shocked. I liked the plot and the characters, especially Romy's interesting backstory and the theme of space. I also liked the sense of danger and tension that built slowly throughout the book.

The Prize by Stacy Gregg

The Prize by Stacy Gregg is the last book in the series called Pony Club Rivals. I would recommend reading the first three books before you read this one.
It is about this girl who's name is Georgina Parker. Her mother was a famous eventing rider, sadly she died in an accident on the cross country course. So Georgie follows in her footsteps to become a professional eventing rider. She goes to an elite boarding school called Blainford, where they have all normal classes, but they also have horse riding classes too. Georgie goes through all the ups and downs of life at Blainford as she learns to ride through all the bullies, fatigues (Blainford's idea of detention) and most of all trying to follow her mother footsteps of becoming the best eventing rider she can be. This book is exciting, breath taking and most of all a good read!!!

Defy The Stars - REVIEW(so far)

Hello who ever clicked on this review,

Today I am reviewing Defy The Stars (not the whole book). The plot of this book is that Noemi (a 17 year old solider from the planet Genesis) and Abel (the most advanced robot ever made) are stuck on a ship in the middle of space and they work together to help save Noemi's home.

A very unique writing style, is something that this book has. It combines 3rd person and a bit first person (in terms of thoughts), and in every chapter the POV changes from Noemi and then Abel. So far I'm enjoying this book and I think the plot and character development is amazing.

I recommend this book to 13-16 year-olds that are looking for a sci-fi romance novel.

A Midsummers Night Dream - Performance

Wednesday 14 March, the day in which Madame Palmer’s Rm14 literacy class had the privilege to experience the spectacle of a play performed by Buckingham’s Company. The play executed to the students on that day was the wonderful, A Midsummer’s Night Dream written by the famous playwright William Shakespeare in 1596, now performed, in front of my peers and I, almost half a millennium later.

No performance that I have ever seen before has ever truly captured the essence of the play quite like Dr Miles Gregory’s version of A Midsummer’s Night Dream did when performed by Buckingham’s Company at the Pop-Up-Globe. Expressions clearly written across actor’s faces completely conveyed the message of emotion, be it happy, sad or even crazy, as expertly as a play ever has.

Dr Miles Gregory, the Artistic Director and founder of the Pop-Up-Globe, gathered together wonderful costumes, original Shakespearean dialect, Maori folklore and modern elements whipped them into a pot and expertly mixed them together to create his wonderful interpretation of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. In Dr Miles Gregory’s, A Midsummer’s Night Dream the three worlds mixed seamlessly yet being completely separated at the same time, the Fairies world, soaked in Maori culture and mischievous behavior, the world of the lovers not chaotic nor sane yet an emotional rollercoaster and the court of Athens, an overwhelming sense of hierarchy with a bit of love sprinkled in.

When William Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer’s Night Dream all those hundreds of years ago, he meant for it to be humorous and Dr Miles Gregory could definitely flex his muscles in that particular field because what he produced would crack a smile on even the most solemn of solemn people. The cast of A Midsummer’s Night Dream were the perfect fit for their parts, having every scene, every line hilarious.

Overall the feeling of A Midsummer’s Night Dream was a lighthearted mischievous mood that ‘turns your frown upside down’. Had William Shakespeare been alive to experience this version of his play, he would have applauded it.

She Not Invisible Review

Hello who ever clicked on this review,

Today I’m reviewing ‘She Not Invisible’ by Marcus Sedgwick (as you can tell from the title). In my opinion this book had a good story line and characters that were developed really well. This book is about a blind 16 year old girl named Laureth and her younger brother Benjamin. They traveled to America (without their mum knowing) to claim their dad’s note book but Laureth panics because she doesn’t know why is her dad in America. She’s worried that her dad is in trouble and goes looking for him.

This book had a interesting writing style because sometimes it will show the writing inside the note book or it will talk about coincidences and the number ‘354’. Personally I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would , this is probably because I thought that the story progressed to slow or as much action as I expected. The ending was also a bit of a disappointment to me. Maybe this book just wasn’t for me.

In a nutshell, I think book is good for 10-14 year olds who are interested in a mystery/adventure book featuring some maths/science and history.

Coco Caramel Review

I have been reading a book called Coco Caramel!
It is part of the Chocolate Box Girls series by Cathy Cassidy.[And my favourite one out of the series too!]
Coco really loves a certain  horse called Caramel, and really despises a boy called Lawrie Marshall.
The really interesting bit is when Coco really wants to have Caramel. She does the most crazy thing ever! I actually thought it would be game over  for her pretty soon.
In the end, I really enjoyed this book. It just proves how enemies can become friends, or something even more!

Hope you enjoy Coco Caramel as much as I did!
